Northwest IMPACT applauds SME Steel for their commitment to excellence in the trade of ironworking.
Utah-based SME Steel has been recognized by ENR Mountain States as a Specialty Contractor of the Year for 2019. This honor adds to SME’s already expansive collection of industry awards and achievements, making the contractor one of the highest decorated employers in our Northwest IMPACT membership.
SME Industries, known publicly as SME Steel, was founded in 1992 by Jerry and Craig Moyes. SME began with approximately 200 employees with a broad industry expertise in structural steel fabrication and erection, performing work in a wide range of market sectors, including commercial, industrial, hospital, institution, government, civic, health clinics, data centers, research and development, airports, distribution centers, sports facilities, casinos, and multi-use project construction. Today, SME boasts over 1,300 employees and leads the state of Utah in steel fabrication by a significant margin.
SME is headquartered in Utah, with additional facilities in Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. The company has experienced inspiring growth since opening in 1992, and is now “the only Full Service Division 5 Company in America.” SME’s expansion includes a family of companies under a variety of names, including SME Steel, SME Steel Contractors, Southwest Steel, CoreBrace, Durafuse Frames, and SME Logistics. SME has been certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction as an AISC certified fabricator and as an AISC certified erector.
As a union contractor and Northwest IMPACT member, SME has developed a solid reputation as a true partner with labor. SME maintains its own erection crews, with an average of over 350 ironworkers employed on SME projects at any given time. SME is also a trusted member of the Ironworker Apprenticeship Program, ensuring the next generation of well-trained, organized and professional ironworkers continue to enjoy meaningful careers with dedicated contractor partners.
Over the last two decades, SME has completed a number of notable projects. Here is a selection of recent key projects, as compiled by ENR Mountain States:
